Lapsi is very popular with Nepalese people who delight in eating the fresh fruit and savour the many varieties of locally made candy. Most trees are planted and carefully tended by farmers who generate a good income from selling the delicous yellow fruit. It is one of the rare plant species.

Lapsi is a deciduous tree up to 30m found in midhill forests, but it is so frequently planted that its natural distribution is uncertain. Unlike many large trees, the wood is of little value as it is soft and light, and does not burn well. The leaves can provide fodder, but the fruit is the main interest and source of extra money for many rural people.

The fruits ripen between October and January, and are eaten fresh or pickled. The fleshy pulp is preserved as jams, made into sour or spicy candies (sweetmeats) or dried for local and international markets. Each fruit has a woody stone with five small seedsarranged in pits at one end.

In the wild fallen fruits are eaten and dispersed by Sambar and Barking deer, but the fruits of most trees are eagerly collected by villagers.
